The Principles for Social-Ecological Urbanism, which was released in 2013, served as the conceptual foundation for the context of the Social-Ecological Urban field. It highlights how thoughtful institution and urban form design—both influenced by urban discourse—can address resilience in interconnected social and ecological urban systems. Globally, cities are realizing more and more that they must strengthen their resilience in order to handle converging challenges, including natural disasters, deteriorating environments, urban development, and climate change. In the last several years, the Arabian countries have witnessed profound transformations of their social urban paradigms from the conventional approaches of generous built-up areas and urban sprawl designs to more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable and resilient social buildings. Through a critical, fact-based analysis of the decision-making processes and urban-architectural products that drove its development, this paper investigates the state of recent social urban projects in a few Arab cities. The aim of this Research Topic is to highlight promising, recent, and innovative research in the subject of social-ecological urbanism. In order to assess the local and global sustainability agendas put into action, mixed-methods data were created using archival research, semi-structured interviews, and field observations. The study also provides evidence of legitimate environmental practices, local urban practices, and community well-being. In order to enlighten upcoming social urban developments, it concludes with suggestions for overcoming problems with the current procedures surrounding the design and implementation of sustainable urban forms.
