Application of Renewable Energy in the Built Environment: Towards Sustainable Development Through Community Centers

The transition to sustainable energy sources is crucial for addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and energy security. Renewable energy (RE) plays a vital role in this transition, offering environmentally friendly alternatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on finite resources. The chapter offers an in-depth examination of the renewable energy (RS) scenario, identifying the major hurdles faced by Egypt and the demographic issues affecting its growth. It starts by discussing the energy demand landscape that is likely to grow with trend toward urbanization and subsequent population increase straining India’s existing power infrastructure. A detailed analysis of energy consumption in buildings follows, covering residential, retail, mixed-use developments, office buildings, industrial facilities, public institutional structures and hospitality buildings. Finally, a case study is presented to illustrate the practical implementation of RE solutions in Egypt. This section analyzes a specific project by examining its successes, challenges and lessons learned. The case study serves as an example of how RE can be effectively integrated into Egypt’s energy landscape while also highlighting the obstacles that must be overcome for adoption. By comprehensively addressing these interconnected topics, this report aims to provide a view of Egypt’s energy challenges and opportunities with a specific emphasis on the potential for RE to transform the country’s built-environment and energy sector.
