Affective Computing and the Future of Education

Emotions are critical in learning, influencing focus, motivation, and resilience. Recent advances in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies enable new ways to measure and support peoples’ emotional experiences. In education, these tools promise to offer personalized emotional support, helping students manage challenges and maintain engagement. However, alongside these benefits are significant ethical concerns, particularly regarding privacy and the potential for emotional manipulation. This chapter explores the opportunities and challenges of Affective Computing in education, examining how AI can enhance emotional support while addressing privacy risks and ethical considerations.
