Grounded in evolutionary psychology theory, this study reveals the impact of sex ratios on male materialism and explores the mediating role of perceived mating market imbalance. Analyzing data from 99 countries, we found a significant correlation between sex ratios and male materialism. Furthermore, through experimental manipulations using visual and textual stimuli to alter perceptions of sex ratios, we identified a causal relationship between sex ratios and male materialism. The findings suggest that a male-biased sex ratios significantly increases male materialism, with perceived mating market imbalance acting as a mediator. Specifically, when men perceive a male-biased sex ratios, heightened competition in the mating market leads to greater materialistic tendencies.

摘要
