As an emerging pedagogical model based on information technology, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) involves cross-cultural teaching and collaboration between students and teachers from different countries. In light of the current demand for developing students’ intercultural communicative competence in the context of globalization and the trend of digital transformation in education, COIL has gained widespread attention as an alternative to traditional international education programs that require physical travel. This study focuses on the Sino-Canadian COIL cooperative program in Interpersonal Communication and Intercultural Communication, aiming to explore and construct a new type of course teaching mode by introducing the COIL model and combining it with the theory of intercultural communication. The quantitative data tests conducted with Chinese students show that the model can significantly enhance students’ intercultural communication skills, promote intercultural communication in diverse ways, improve students’ intercultural competence in an all-rounded and multi-dimensional way, and truly embody the integration of technology and culture in educational practice.
