Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors were selected to upgrade the muon endcap system of the CMS experiment due to their radiation hardness, high spatial resolution, and ability to manage the higher level-1 trigger rates expected for the HL-LHC, while maintaining performance under the demanding conditions. GE1/1 was installed in Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) in the innermost region of the CMS endcap muon spectrometer. In this paper, we present an overview of GE1/1 operation and highlight the insights gained.
