The Maldives occupy a critical geostrategic position along the vital Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs) in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) that connects the energy-rich Middle East with the industrial hubs of East and Southeast Asia. These maritime corridors, which include shipping routes passing between the Strait of Hormuz and the Strait of Malacca, make the state central to global trade and energy security. Consequently, the country has turned into an operational hub in the Indo-Pacific rivalries among the competing powers like India, China, and the United States. Under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) the increased Chinese investments have raised concerns among the other powers. India on the other hand, while protecting its traditional clout, reinforces its maritime outreach and security partnerships to counterbalance this influence. Assessing the given situation, the Maldives has been following a multi-vectored diplomacy by selectively engaging with the contending powers to maximize its gains. By utilizing its geostrategic centrality through strategic partnerships by offsetting rival interests, the country strives to secure national interests while avoiding overdependence on any single actor.
