Adverse Effects of Coastal Saline Environment on the Water Infrastructure: A Field Study

Salinity in groundwater poses serious challenges to providing adequate drinking water to people and irrigation water for crops. Salinity of water more than 0.5 and 2.0 ppt are generally considered unsuitable for drinking and irrigation application, respectively. The saline water, soil, as well as ambient saline air cause adverse effects on the various physical structures resulting in reduced functional life. The field study was conducted on six surface-water-based water supply schemes and five lift irrigation schemes in rural areas of coastal Bapatla district, Andhra Pradesh. It was found that components that come in direct contact saline and humid environment, viz., suction pipes, delivery conduits, water distribution pipelines made of mild steel (MS) and galvanized iron (GI) are the most vulnerable to corrosion. The damages are mostly corrosion and decay of pipe, leading to development of holes and leakages. Various preventive measures, such as, surface protective coating and wraps do only protect only outside surface of water pipes. Use of alternative materials, such as, weathering steel, may be explored to address the problem. It is important to choose appropriate material at the time of designing to prevent or prolong salinity-induced corrosion damages to water infrastructure.
