The construction industry generates significant waste, and transitioning to a circular economy (CE) faces several challenges. Implementing CE principles can enhance demolition planning for efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability, reducing environmental impact through selective demolition and improved waste management practices. This research paper investigates the barriers to implementing CE practices in construction and demolition waste (C&DW). By extensively reviewing existing literature and gathering insights from field experts, the study aims to identify and comprehensively analyze the critical factors influencing the repurposing of concrete in C&DW. The research employs Grey Influence Analysis (GINA) to reveal and quantify the complex connections among these factors. This methodology provides a detailed understanding of how these factors interact and impact one another in the context of adopting CE in Indian demolition waste. The primary goals include identifying the most critical barrier and exploring the challenges in reusing Indian demolition waste. The barriers selected are high reuse/recycling costs, initial investment, low incentives, uncompetitive prices, negative perception, lack of certifications, limited vision, ineffective handling, low awareness, resistance to change, and lack of business models. Using GINA, the study precisely identifies the primary barrier influencing the system and evaluates its underlying causes. The research outcomes hold substantial significance for policymakers, industry practitioners, and stakeholders by providing crucial insights to enhance sustainable practices within the construction and waste management sectors. Ultimately, this contributes to establishing a more efficient and seamless CE model in the Indian context.
