The state of Tamilnadu is having coastline from Chennai along east coast to Thengapattinam along the west coast bordering Arabian sea. The coastline is oriented along north-south along east and along east-west along Arabian sea. The coast is a thickly populated one. The west coast is subjected to frequent wave action during monsoon from June to September resulting in erosion of infrastructure facilities. Apart from this the coastal stretch is having a famous temple with connectivity roads. Many parts of the road are protected by just dumping heavy stones. The already executed protection measures in the form of sea wall is totally damaged due to monsoon wave action. Hence detailed bathymetric survey covering a distance of 1 km along the coast and 500 m towards sea side was carriedout. Based on the field survey, model studies were planned to design suitable protection measures. The historical shoreline changes were assessed through desk studies which include wave action along profile and satellite imageries. Based on the studies, groin field was proposed. The project was completed in 2017 and post monitoring of the impact of remedial measures were done. The study has indicated good beach formation which protect the road and temple.Stable beach was seen through the year till date. The details are explained in the paper.
