Construction and demolition wastes constitute one of the major components of wastes generated worldwide. Very large quantities of aggregates are used in concrete production and construction activities. As the structures reach the end of their life span, they are demolished and creates landfill problems and environmental impact. On the other hand, continuous extraction and quarrying of natural aggregates for construction is causing depletion of natural resources. The recycling of demolished and construction waste in to aggregates to be used in new engineering application provides a promising solution to both the problems. The main aim of this work is to determine the mechanical and durability properties of the concrete. For this purpose, the M30 grade of concrete with a W/C ratio of 0.4 was proposed and replaced the natural coarse aggregate (NCA) with demolished, and construction waste aggregates (DA and CWA) at a constant percentage of 30%. Furthermore, the results compared with conventional concrete prepared with 100% natural aggregates. Observed from the experimental results there is a reduction in compressive strength by an amount of 7% in demolished and construction waste concretes when compared to conventional concrete at the age of 28 days. And also found an increase in the percentage of water absorption is approximately 32% and 45% for demolished and construction waste aggregate concretes. The Rapid chloride ion penetration is 13% and 20% for demolished and construction waste aggregate concrete than conventional concrete prepared with 100% NCA.

摘要

Construction and demolition wastes constitute one of the major components of wastes generated worldwide. Very large quantities of aggregates are used in concrete production and construction activities. As the structures reach the end of their life span, they are demolished and creates landfill problems and environmental impact. On the other hand, continuous extraction and quarrying of natural aggregates for construction is causing depletion of natural resources. The recycling of demolished and construction waste in to aggregates to be used in new engineering application provides a promising solution to both the problems.
