Numerical Analysis of Shield Tunnel Deformation Under Upper Unloading

With the development of urban underground spaces and river dredging, there are increasingly more cases of foundation pit unloading above shield tunnels. The primary impacts on the tunnel are significant uplift and minor convergence deformations. Extensive engineering practice indicates that the impact of foundation pit construction on underlying tunnels is a highly complicated process, with factors such as foundation reinforcement, foundation pit support systems, excavation size, and foundation pit exposure time all playing crucial roles in the tunnel heave deformation. Although measured data from some engineering cases show relatively small transverse convergence deformation, often manifesting as vertical ovalization deformation, its impact should not be overlooked. While each project undergoes detailed design evaluation before construction, uncertainties in assessing the impact on the strata and construction have led to significant uplift and convergence deformations in some cases. This highlights that research on such conditions still lags far behind engineering practice and practical needs.
