The Urban Political Theory (UPE) is a branch of political ecology that emerged in the late 1990s rooted in Marxist-structuralism tradition that opens up politicizing views not just on the complex dialectic relationship between society and nature but also about the deep roots of power-relations, neoliberal metabolic processes, uneven socio-ecological development, and patterns of winners and losers embedded in the reproduction of urban spaces and societies (Ajibade 2017). It builds on the political analysis of the socio-ecological relationships and power struggles which underlie environmental transformations (Ajibade 2017). This normative concept and social movement in the United States was used to explain the highly uneven distribution of environmental ‘goods’ and ‘bads’ in the city (Swyngedouw and Kaika 2014).
