In sub-Saharan African cities, two key trends are on the rise: climate change leading to increasing temperatures, and rapid population growth. Natural population growth as well as migration from rural areas to major cities throughout the continent has led to Africa being home to 79 of the 100 fastest-growing cities in the world (Global Center on Adaptation 2022). Urban sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces several unique challenges along with high and increasing populations, such as poverty and informal settlements and basic urban infrastructure, the provision of which has not kept up with the rate of population growth.
