This chapter is a critical analysis of the concept of empowerment theoretically and practically reflected through international policy documents particularly in the context of gender. The Sustainable Development Goal-5 envisions gender equality and empowerment by the year 2030. The feminist engagement with the development discourse witnessed several policy shifts from welfare, equity to empowerment. ‘Wages for Housework’ was construed both as bringing equality and empowerment since the 1970s. From the Indian Economic Survey 2020 highlighting 84% of women’s working hours being spent on unpaid activities and 80% activities of men being spent on paid work to Indian party system engaging with wages for housework in the Tamil Nadu elections (2021), it is to be examined and evaluated how far would this measure bring about empowerment of women, particularly in the context of India? Would this be a viable solution for India?
