Seasonal Effect of Indoor Air Quality in Various Types of Buildings

Indoor Air Quality has attracted attention worldwide in the last decade due to its potential health effects. It can be determined by measuring the air quality within a closed space where people spend the majority of their time. This research paper mainly examines seasonal variations in Indoor Air Quality in various buildings such as Residential, Commercial, and Educational buildings. The parameters measured were Temperature, Relative Humidity PM1, PM2.5, CO, CO2, and VOC. Concentrations were recorded at 15-min intervals. The indoor air quality monitoring findings indicate that PM1 and PM2.5 concentrations were higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for R1, C2, E1, and E2 in both seasons. For CO and CO2 levels, the concentrations for all monitored buildings were less than the WHO guidelines and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) Standard respectively except C1 in winter season. There was a significant seasonal variation, with indoor air quality being poor in winter compared to summer season. This may be due to better ventilation during summer season. During the summer, ambient air quality or/and human activity had a significant impact on indoor air pollution levels, whereas indoor sources had a greater impact on indoor concentrations during the winter.
