Enhancing Air Quality in Dhule City: Monitoring Dust Levels and Strategies for Reduction

Dhule, a city in Maharashtra, faces significant air quality challenges, with an average AQI of 133 during the study period (October and November), driven by PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ concentrations of 128 µg/m3 and 111 µg/m3, respectively. Industrial emissions, vehicular exhaust, open waste burning, and agricultural residue combustion were identified as primary pollution sources. This study proposes mitigation strategies to reduce particulate pollution by 30–40% within five years. A renewable energy transition, including 15 MW of rooftop solar for municipal infrastructure and 25 MW of captive solar plants for industries, could lower PM₂.₅ emissions by 18–22%. Transport electrification, targeting 50% of municipal buses and expanding charging infrastructure, may reduce traffic-related PM₂.₅ (currently 38% of total emissions) by 25–30%. Improved waste management, including segregated collection and biomethanation plants, can address open burning (15% of PM₂.₅). Additional measures include sustainable farming practices to curb agricultural burning and urban greening initiatives. These evidence-based solutions, supported by policy incentives and community engagement, provide a scalable framework for cities with similar air quality challenges, contributing to India's clean air goals.
