Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT)-Based COVID-19 Kits

SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus which is responsible for the infectious disease COVID-19. Infection is transmitted when infected individual’s respiratory droplets meet healthy person via sneezing, coughing, or speaking, affect respiratory symptoms, and cause pneumonia and in some cases respiratory failure. Early and accurate diagnosis is the main requirement to reduce its spread, mitigation of potential consequences as well as initiation of timely treatment due to its high level of contagiousness. Initially, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was employed for the detection of COVID-19. Nowadays, other alternative techniques have also gained popularity for the detection, i.e., colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay, loop-mediated isothermal amplification, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, electrochemical sensors, etc. However, they vary in their efficacy, specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, and cost. This summarization of literature on COVID-19 diagnosis tools showed the advantages and disadvantages of these methods since accurate diagnosis plays a pivotal role in interrupting the chains of transmission and improving patients’ outcomes. These compilations can also help to enhance detection efficiency as well as quality in greater detail.
