COVID-19, Pneumonia, and Tuberculosis: Challenges and Treatment

The co-occurrence of COVID-19 with tuberculosis (TB) and pneumonia presents complex challenges in the formulation of treatment regimens, requiring careful consideration of drug interactions in addition to diagnosis. Such coinfections significantly escalate mortality rates, highlighting the critical need for effective treatment guidelines. The COVID-19 pandemic showed a profound effect on the incidence rates of other respiratory infections due to various factors, including lockdowns, quarantine, social distancing, poor diagnostic facilities, and limited access to health care facilities. The biomarkers associated with TB and pneumonia, like cytokines and CRP, may contribute to heightened COVID-19 susceptibility and worse outcomes. The drug interactions among treatments for COVID-19, TB, and pneumonia are not well-characterized and are under investigation. Together, the interplay between COVID-19, TB, and pneumonia necessitates tailored treatment approaches, biomarker monitoring, and collaborative research efforts to optimize treatment outcomes in order to address broader public health implications, including the emergence of antibiotic resistance, spread, diagnosis, and disease dynamics.
