Application of Biotechnological Tools for Enhancement of Nutritional Quality in Maize

Malnutrition caused by deficiency in vitamins and minerals has emerged as a major health issue. It leads to poor growth and development besides causing severe socio-economic losses. Among various avenues, crop biofortification offers sustainable and cost-effective solution to alleviate malnutrition. Maize contributes significantly as food, feed, fodder, and various industrial by-products. However, maize grains are deficient in vitamin-A, vitamin-E, essential amino acids such as lysine, tryptophan and methionine, besides anthocyanins, and minerals such as iron and zinc. Deficiency of these nutrients causes various health hazards and in extreme cases mortality as well. Molecular breeding offers great opportunity to introgress mutant gene(s) that enhance the nutritional quality, besides accelerating the breeding cycle. Moreover, transgenic technology provides wider variation in traits through genetic engineering of the target genes. Here, we discussed the importance of various nutritional factors, their deficiency symptoms, available genes and examples of molecular breeding and transgenic approaches that have been employed to enhance the nutritional qualities in maize grains.
