Mechanization in Maize Crop—Indian Context

Maize is a vital crop in India, ranking third after rice and wheat. It is primarily cultivated during the Kharif season, covering around 80% of the total area of 8.7 million hectares (2010–2011). Maize significantly contributes to India’s food security, accounting for approximately 9% of the national food basket. Additionally, it generates substantial revenue, with a value of over Rs. 100 billion to the agricultural GDP. The crop also provides employment opportunities, creating over 100 million man-days of work in the farm and related sectors. Beyond its use as a staple food and animal feed, maize serves as a key raw material for various industries, including starch, oil, protein, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and more. This chapter explores the scope, importance, and mechanization impact of maize cultivation in India. It provides the overview of the structural changes in rural labour dynamics, emphasizing the need to replace manual to machines. Mechanization level of India stands at approximately 40%, which is lower than other progressive countries. Mechanized cultivation has the potential to enhance cropping intensity by 5–20%, minimize input costs by 15–20%, and improve crop yield through less time with accuracy. Mechanization is one of the keys for maize cultivation which can transform India’s agricultural landscape by increasing efficiency, productivity, and profitability. It is crucial for addressing the labour shortages, reducing production costs, and ensuring food security. Mechanization in maize cultivation is particularly feasible due to its row-based cultivation pattern which includes seed-to-seed mechanization sequence, and detailed stages of the crop cycle like land preparation, sowing, irrigation fertilization, weeding harvesting, and post-harvesting technologies through mechanization. The technologies reduce drudgery, save time, minimize post-harvesting losses, and improve the quality and quality of the maize crop. The chapter discusses how mechanization can transform maize cultivation in India. It highlights its potential to close productivity gaps, improve rural livelihoods, and promote long-term agricultural sustainability, provided it is implemented scientifically and strategically. With supportive policies, proper training, and infrastructure development, there is a vast and promising opportunity for mechanization in maize cultivation.
