The lumbar spine and sacral spine are each composed of five vertebrae. The lumbar spine is connected by fibrocartilage called the intervertebral disc between the vertebral bodies, and the rear part is connected by the articular process as a synovial joint (Fig. 5.1). The sacral spine is fused with the vertebral body, and the sacral ala on both sides forms a joint with the ilium.
