One of the primary concerns of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in architecture revolves around the automation of creative tasks, a fear that resembles the anxiety over replacement of jobs that architects faced in the 1980s with the introduction of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools. This chapter discusses critical challenges that AI presents to architecture, specifically when it comes to replacing human tasks. In addition, it provides a narrative framework for understanding the dual nature of AI’s potential in shaping the future of the architectural profession: replacing or enhancing. We analyse sixty architectural tasks (performance criteria) defined by the National Standard of Competency for Architects produced by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia, which are directly embedded in architecture curriculum, by examining the extent to which they are susceptible to automation and discussing the potential transformation of these tasks considering AI’s capabilities. Our findings indicate that automation of tasks by AI will affect architects in Australia requiring a review of the profession role and skills.
