Sustainability of Architectural Design Processes in the Metamodern Age: The Value of AI-Human Collaboration

We are living in an era, oscillating between the rigid objectivity of modernism and the cynicism of postmodernism, while simultaneously embracing meaning and value. This is the age of metamodernism, driven by rapid technological advancements, among which, artificial intelligence (AI) presents a critical challenge to the sustainability of architectural practice: adapt or risk obsolescence. Exploration of the rise of metamodernism and the application of AI elicits key questions: How is architecture expressed in this metamodern age? How is AI used in architectural practice, and what role can it play in metamodern design? Will AI replace architects in the design process, or is there a sustainable way for designers to retain control? In response, integration of Large Language Models (LLMs) within a metamodern process is explored through a case study. Conducting a Research By Design methodology, the goal of the study is to engage with LLMs and physical design through a metamodern process of iterative experimentation, oscillating between deconstructions and reconstructions to refine production outputs. Resulting in an example of what metamodern architecture and architectural design processes could be, this chapter aims to illustrate how AI was able to be integrated sustainably, retaining meaning and creative control over the design.
