Since the late 1950s, architecture has undergone a critical transformation enabled by the use of computers to aid the design process. Concepts such as Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) emerged as part of the theoretical knowledge developed by architecture practitioners and researchers. Initial CAAD applications focused on productivity and efficiency of architectural draft, but architects realized that there was a tremendous potential for creative support or even human-machine collaborative tasks. Today, design is aided by a wide range of computer tools that perform from simple tasks (draw a line) to sophisticated calculations (simulate thermal comfort). Some of these applications incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms helping to enhance design sustainability when analysing environmental performance, for instance. As such, AI-Aided Design (AIAD) refers to emergent computational design processes that employ AI as design generator or assistant tool. Starting from an analogy of movie archetypes, we aim at providing an explanation of AIAD and correlate AI and Sustainability as a broad concept. This chapter further presents the United Nations considerations about AI to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, the implications of the Beijing Consensus developed by UNESCO (Planning Education in the AI era: Leap the leap. United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Paris, 2019) to architecture education and the four themes explored in this book.
