Developmental Psychology and Constructivism: From Piaget to Contemporary Theory

Jean Piaget is a pioneer of children’s cognitive development. As discussed in Chapter “Language Acquisition: Statistical Learning and Social Cognitive Skills”, while there is often debate about whether experiential or innate factors are more crucial in child development, Piaget emphasized the interaction between both factors and highlighted children’s active role in knowledge construction. As will be detailed later, Piaget is known as a constructivist.
