Meniscus Transplants: Indication and Treatment Options
摘要
“The meniscus is essential for knee” biomechanics and the preservation of cartilage. Numerous studies have demonstrated its protective impact on knee cartilage. Meniscus removal is known to result in osteoarthritis of the knee joint. In recent decades, the practice has transitioned entirely from meniscectomy to meniscal repair. Currently, meniscal repair is regarded as the gold standard for the treatment of meniscal injuries. Nevertheless, certain circumstances render meniscus repair unfeasible, necessitating the sacrifice of the meniscus. A meniscus transplant is the sole choice in appropriate instances. The literature describes several possibilities, including meniscal allograft transplantation, autologous tissue transplantation, scaffolds for the meniscus, and meniscal spacers. This chapter intends to examine various alternatives and synthesise the existing research regarding meniscus replacement trends.
