This chapter introduces a historical but accidental discovery of an unrivalled masterpiece of the Bronze Age (4000 BC – 1 AD) –Bianzhong of Marquis Yi of Zeng (曾侯乙编钟Zenghouyi bells), a set of complete chime bells for the entertainment of ancient Chinese aristocracy, discovered in 1978 in Sui county, Hubei province, People’s Republic of China. This seminal discovery found the underground royal palace of music that had been sleeping for centuries. Chimes bells were first made in the West Zhou (1046 BC – 771 BC) and continued to be important musical instruments to the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD). These percussions were usually hung on a frame and were arranged by their sizes, suggesting their tunes. The chime bells make all the semitones in five and a half octaves. They play in today’s C major and the tonic train may be alternated. The present chapter also detailed the scientifically designed, government-led replication and re-creation of Bianzhong of Marquis Yi of Zeng, including the main technical specifications and parameters in the re-creation of bianzhong.
