Harmonic drives, or strain wave gears, are precision mechanical systems widely recognized for their compactness, efficiency, and versatility in high-precision applications such as robotics, aerospace, and medical devices. This paper provides a comprehensive review of harmonic drives, focusing on their kinematic modeling, wave generator geometries, tooth profile optimization, material considerations, and stress analysis under loading conditions. Recent advancements in flexspline design, wave generator innovations, and manufacturing techniques are discussed, emphasizing their role in improving precision, durability, and efficiency. The study highlights emerging materials, such as bulk metallic glasses and carbon-fiber composites, alongside advancements like split cam designs and spiral-based cam profiles, which enhance performance while addressing challenges like stress concentration and deformation. Applications across diverse industries further underscore the indispensable role of harmonic drives in modern technology.
