This chapter examines translator functional styles through recharacterization of Chinese and British story figures in Er Ma. It analyzes how selected figure labels interact with contexts to characterize contrasting types: “self-paralytic” versus “self-made” Chinese men, and “progressive” versus “narrow-minded” British women. The study investigates translator linguistic idiosyncrasies in figure label renditions, semantic field reconstructions, and discourse presentation recreations. Results show varied translator approaches in recharacterizing figures, with different emphasis levels for Chinese versus British characters. The analysis reveals how these stylistic differences potentially influence target readers’ interpretations and mental constructions of story figures through diverse recharacterization strategies.

摘要
