A Fundamental Approach to Renewable Energy: Classification and Development

Renewable energy (RE) is essential in fostering sustainable, environmentally responsible, and economically viable electricity generation systems. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported a notable shift in the global energy landscape since 2019, marked by a steady decline in dependence on nonrenewable energy sources for the generation of electricity. This transition coincided with an increased integration of RE sources to address the ever-growing global energy needs. Advancements in RE technologies continue to evolve, with ongoing research focusing on enhancing energy conversion efficiencies and optimizing system performance to meet contemporary challenges. This chapter will provide a deep insight into the classification and development of various RE technologies, including hydro, solar, wind, bioenergy, geothermal, and hydrogen energy. Finally, the technical, economic, and energy conversion efficiency challenges associated with RE technologies are discussed, offering comprehensive recommendations to overcome these obstacles and facilitate the widespread adoption of clean energy solutions.
