The Role of Fossil Fuels in a Sustainable Energy System
摘要
Fossil fuels have historically driven global economic growth and technological advancement. However, their environmental externalities and contribution to climate change present serious challenges to sustainability. This chapter explores the complex and evolving role of fossil fuels in the transition to sustainable energy systems. It examines the historical context, environmental impacts, current global energy reliance, and emerging technologies aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of fossil fuels. By integrating fossil fuels with clean energy technologies and circular carbon approaches, it is possible to bridge the gap between current energy demands and future sustainability goals. However, achieving this balance will require coordinated global efforts, substantial investments, and a robust commitment to environmental stewardship.
