摘要

Fossil fuels have played a central role in shaping the modern world. Fossil fuels remain the dominant source of global energy consumption, powering industries, transportation, and households across the world. As conventional energy sources, they are nonrenewable in nature, derived from the ancient remains of once-living organisms buried deep beneath the Earth’s surface for millions of years and gradually transformed by intense heat, pressure, and time, and they are destined to be exhausted if reliance continues without sustainable alternatives. Fossil fuels have played an instrumental role in powering the industrial development and economic expansion of human civilization. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the origin, classification, development, and global significance of fossil fuels. It explores their geological formation over millions of years, the history of their discovery and utilization, and their classification into coal, oil, and natural gas.
