China’s medical and health institutions mainly include hospitals and primary medical and health institutions. Since the reform and opening-up, the number of hospitals in China has maintained a continuous growth trend. By the end of 2021, there were 36,570 hospitals in China, 3.9 times that of 1978, of which 67.7% were private. Correspondingly, the number of hospital beds in China has also experienced continuous growth. In 2021, the number of beds in medical and health institutions per 1000 population reached 6.7. Although large-scale medical equipment is mainly concentrated in second-level and above hospitals, the equipment allocation of primary medical and health institutions is also improving year by year. In terms of informatization construction, the hospital management information system, clinical information system and regional health information system have all achieved rapid development. Government investment in the health field is concentrated in primary medical and health institutions and basic medical security.
