The cradle of Chinese civilization resembles an enormous three-step staircase. The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the Roof of the World, which constitutes the first terrace, stands tall at the top. The Great Xing’an Mountains, the Taihang Mountains, the Wushan Mountains and the myriad of mountain chains in the west of Hunan Province, running northeast-southwest, serve as the boundaries of the second and third terraces. To their west lies the second terrace that centers upon the Chinese Loess Plateau, and to their east is the third terrace comprised of plains and hills.

摘要

The cradle of Chinese civilization resembles an enormous three-step staircase. The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the Roof of the World, which constitutes the first terrace, stands tall at the top. The Great Xing’an Mountains, the Taihang Mountains, the Wushan Mountains and the myriad of mountain chains in the west of Hunan Province, running northeast-southwest, serve as the boundaries of the second and third terraces. To their west lies the second terrace that centers upon the Chinese Loess Plateau, and to their east is the third terrace comprised of plains and hills.
