The South Atlantic has long been regarded as a zone of peace and cooperation, supported by frameworks such as the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone (ZOPACAS) and regional integration initiatives. However, emerging geopolitical and geoeconomic dynamics, including increasing maritime traffic, the exploitation of marine resources, and the presence of extra-regional powers, pose new challenges to the region’s stability. This chapter examines Argentina’s perspective on the South Atlantic, focusing on its approach to key geopolitical issues such as the sovereignty claim over the Question of the Malvinas Islands and its strategic interests in the Antarctic region. Argentina’s policies in the South Atlantic reflect a dual approach: reinforcing sovereignty claims while promoting sustainable governance and regional cooperation. This chapter argues that Argentina’s perspective of the South Atlantic as a zone of peace requires balancing between sovereignty claims and regional cooperation, including the promotion of a strategic partnership with regional partners through the Coordination for the South Atlantic Area (CAMAS), ZOPACAS, and the Atlantic Cooperation Partnership.
