Brazil’s strategic role in the geopolitics of submarine cables is crucial, given their importance as the backbone of global internet connectivity and international communication. This chapter delves into Brazil’s efforts to secure these critical infrastructures and the geopolitical implications of its actions. It traces the historical development of submarine cables in Brazil, from their nineteenth-century origins to the present, and provides an overview of Brazil’s current submarine cable ecosystem, including its connections to Europe, Africa, and North America. Special attention is given to initiatives such as the BRICS Cable project, which aims to strengthen connectivity among BRICS nations while reducing dependency on Western infrastructure. This chapter seeks to understand how Brazil assumes responsibility for securing its submarine cable infrastructure and the potential geopolitical impacts of this role. The following research questions are addressed: How does Brazil assume responsibility for securing its submarine cable infrastructure, and what are the potential geopolitical impacts of this responsibility? A qualitative approach, guided by a systematic literature review, is adopted. Policy documents and academic sources are analysed to support the study’s discussions. The analysis highlights Brazil’s influence in the global digital economy and its evolving role in international relations. This comprehensive framework illuminates the complex interplay between technology, security, and geopolitics in the context of Brazil’s digital infrastructure.
