Understanding the Role of Social Safety Net Programs in Combatting the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh
摘要
This chapter examines the role of Social Safety Net Programs (SSNPs) in mitigating the socio-economic repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in Bangladesh. It presents a conceptual understanding of SSNPs, their roles in poverty reduction, and their importance in tackling food security and chronic poverty. The chapter focuses on the pandemic’s economic and social disruptions, such as job losses, lower income, and food insecurity, particularly among disadvantaged people. It examines the government’s response, including stimulus packages, enlarged SSNPs, and healthcare initiatives. The literature study highlights the problems of SSNP implementation, such as political instability, corruption, and insufficient targeting, while underlining the need for additional money and better administration. The chapter concludes that SSNPs are critical for protecting people with low incomes and in supporting inclusive growth, particularly during crises, and it advocates for more political commitment and budget allocation to expand these programs in Bangladesh.
