This introduction highlights the critical role of Social Safety Net Programs (SSNPs) in addressing the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh, particularly on low-income families. It highlights how the pandemic exacerbated poverty, food insecurity, and inequality, prompting the Government of Bangladesh to implement SSNPs to mitigate these challenges. The chapter outlines the book’s focus on assessing the effectiveness of SSNPs in ensuring food security and supporting vulnerable populations during the crisis. It emphasizes the importance of localized interventions and the need for an updated database to efficiently deliver assistance. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining primary data from surveys and interviews with secondary data to analyze the implementation and impact of SSNPs across four selected unions. The chapter sets the stage for understanding the immediate and long-term implications of SSNPs in crisis response and poverty alleviation, offering insights for future policy formulation.
