Rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus) (Fig. 25.1) is an important species with high economic value. This native species of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, is a significant commercial fish in the region (Hara et al., 1986; Mejos et al., 2023). The distribution of rabbitfish is primarily in tropical coastal waters (Darsiani et al., 2024). This fish has become a candidate for cultivation in marine aquaculture development (Laining et al., 2019) to compensate for the capture of wild populations, as continuous fishing can lead to declines in natural populations (Lante et al., 2012b; Syah et al., 2020). Rabbitfish have several advantages. They are highly preferred by local consumers due to their delicious taste and tender white meat (Cabanilla-Legaspi et al., 2021; Kamaruddin et al., 2015) and are commonly served in restaurants in South Sulawesi. Additionally, they command a relatively high price at the farmer level. These fish can thrive in high densities, respond well to artificial feed, and exhibit a high growth rate (Usman et al., 2021). They can be cultivated in floating net cages and ponds (Syah et al., 2020) and can spawn in a controlled manner using hormonal stimuli (Lante et al., 2007) or naturally.
