This article explores the euro crisis (2010–2012) and the measures taken afterward in an attempt to prevent the outbreak of new financial crises. Critical in the stocktaking exercise is the inherent tension between communitarian and intergovernmental governance of the European Union (EU). Following the logic of the basic concepts of this volume, this chapter operationalizes this inherent European conflict between “supra” and “inter” by means of top-down “regionalism” versus bottom-up “regionalization.” Considering the lessons learned from the euro crisis, the question is whether regionalism has declined at the expense of regionalization.
