The introduction to this book points to the continuing relevance of the topic of regionalism, regionalization, and institutional change in two specific regions, Europe and East Asia. The European Union (EU) is a unique project with a high level of institutionalization. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is at the center of integration efforts in East Asia; ASEAN centrality is a core notion in this respect. Finally, this chapter states the central questions and introduces the different chapters of the book. The questions are not necessarily of a comparative nature, although lessons learnt from examples of regionalization and regionalism are and continue to be relevant.
