Laboratory Investigation on Mechanical Properties of Porous Asphalt for Being Used in Vietnam
摘要
Porous asphalt (PA) has been extensively used worldwide not only to improve the skid resistance of the surface layer of expressways but also to enhance drivers’ visibility on rainy days thanks to its open texture and interconnected pores, allowing water to flow inside the material. Although PA has recently successfully been applied in the northern part of the country, there are still concerns about the performance of the material as it is going to be used in the south because of the hotter climatic conditions. Thus, this paper aims to study the performance of PA as compared with dense-graded asphalt concrete (AC). First, the Marshall method was used for mixture design according to Vietnamese standards (TCVN). Then, the fundamental properties and the resistance to rutting and fatigue of the materials were characterized. The results clearly show that PA has poorer mechanical performance. It implies that a much higher modification level of the bitumen used is required to ensure a long service life of PA pavement, as hot temperatures and high traffic volume are two significant pavement causes of distress in the south of the country.
