The core of geographical research is the coupled human and natural system, in which human and natural components interact. It is characterized by complexity, non-linearity, and uncertainty. Geographical research requires systems thinking and an integrated approach to deepen the understanding of complex coupled human and natural systems, reveal dynamic evolution of socio–ecological element, analyze coupling mechanisms among processes, clarify optimal regulation pathways, and serve regional sustainable development.
