Nativization of Persian Loanwords in Turkish: A Phonological Analysis
摘要
Some studies have investigated phonological mechanisms in the process of borrowing words from other languages (e.g., Moya, 1998). However, research on the nativization of Persian loanwords in Turkish is scarce. Accordingly, to fill this niche, the present study aims to investigate the phonological processes involved in Turkish words borrowed from Persian. The data for this study are derived from four sources: (a) the author’s field notes of spoken Turkish, (b) Tietze and Lazard’s (1967) list of Persian borrowed words in Turkish, (c) Golkarian’s (2011) Turkish-Persian dictionary, and (d) Parker’s (2008) Webster’s Turkish-English Thesaurus Dictionary. The last three sources were used as references. Concerning the field notes, I documented Persian-based Turkish words while listening to Turkish on various occasions. The data were then analyzed from a phonological perspective. The results indicate that various phonological processes are involved in nativizing borrowed Persian words. It is hoped that the present study will contribute to the literature on phonological features of lexical borrowing in general, and Turkish borrowed words, in particular.
