Climate change is both a threat to and a consequence of the health system’s activities. It affects global health and puts pressure on health systems, which, in turn, account for more than 4% of greenhouse gas emissions, significantly contributing to global warming. A call for action is needed to create future health systems that are both resilient and have a low carbon footprint. While some global initiatives have recently been engaged at the worldwide level, different strategies must be agreed upon, and stakeholders in the healthcare sector need to be widely involved in these new approaches. This chapter presents the most recent findings on the health system’s contribution to climate change, highlights evidence-based methodologies for footprint assessment, and suggests possible solutions and ways forward.
