Environment has become a focal point of discussion for the past few decades. Considering the increase in natural and climatic disasters across several vulnerable regions of the world, realising sustainable development has become urgent. On the other hand, connectivity is a wide-ranging concept. With changes in the political configurations, connectivity has come to occupy a significant position in the twenty-first century geopolitical theatre. Add to this, the concept of development partnerships. The traditional donor–recipient relationship has now been replaced by partnerships where the actors involved are considered equal. Indeed, development partnerships have become pivotal for catalysing resource mobilisation and leveraging global public goods. This chapter explores the concept of connectivity from a geopolitical and geoeconomics perspective. Section 2 sketches a historical trajectory of connectivity in contemporary times by delving into the definitions of connectivity and how it has evolved as a challenge over the years. Section 3 examines the interlinkages between development partnerships and the connectivity regime and how the two have become important drivers of the global environmental governance. Sections 4 and 5 traces the European Union’s role and its impact as one of the pivotal regional organisations in the global stage, especially in the context of an assertive China. Section 6 concludes.
