Qatar, despite small size and limited influence, has been able to play important role in regional conflicts. After the outbreak of the Hamas-Israel war, Qatar emerged as the primary mediator to be actively involved in achieving a ceasefire and ending the war. However, frustration over failure to achieve a ceasefire and inability to influence Hamas actions led to Doha temporarily suspending mediation efforts in November 2024 only to resume it later. Notwithstanding, the mediation efforts, Qatari role in providing financial and political support to Hamas is likely to face greater international scrutiny in the wake of Hamas’s attack of 7 October that the majority of the global community viewed as a terrorist action. Indo-Qatari relations have continued to flourish despite some challenges, especially as eight former Indian naval officers working for an Omani military company in Doha were detained in December 2022. After much diplomatic parleys and behind-the-scene negotiations, the Indian nationals were released and returned to India in February 2024. Notably, EAM S. Jaishankar undertook several visits to the Gulf country during the period. Bilateral ties remained largely unaffected with robust trade, investment, energy and security relations continuing.
