Oman is one of the most important countries in the Gulf region and has gradually been working to regain its political and strategic space after the power transition that brought Haitham bin Tariq al-Said to power. Under the new Sultan, Oman has continued to focus on economic diversification and development, and has kept a low profile so far as the regional politics, conflicts and disputes are concerned. Oman has also worked to improve relations with the GCC countries, especially Saudi Arabia, and has avoided taking positions that can antagonise Riyadh. This is a different approach compared to Muscat’s regional policy under Sultan Qaboos who maintained an active and independent foreign policy position. India and Oman share a multi-dimensional and robust relationship encompassing trade, commerce, defence, security, political and diplomatic ties. Oman continues to attract greater Indian attentions mainly because of its strategic location and the potentials in strengthening economic and defence partnerships. In December 2023, Sultan Haitham visited India, his first to the country and the first visit by the Sultan of Oman since 1997. Prime Minister Modi had visited Oman in February 2018. Additional ministerial and diplomatic visits took place during 2023 and 2024 underlining the growing bilateral relations.
