Although small with limited influence, Bahrain is an important country in the Gulf region with notable presence among the GCC. The island nation has come out stronger from the Arab Spring uprising and the COVID-19 pandemic. Bahraini leadership was brave to join the Abraham Accords and avoided breaking relations with Israel in the wake of the Gaza crisis. Internally, the Bahraini government has taken notable steps to bring political stability and economic growth and are likely to remain an important voice in the Gulf, notwithstanding the smaller size. The Indo-Bahraini relations go back to historical times and a large Indian expatriate population is employed in the oil, financial, services and other sectors. The political ties have strengthened with closer and regular political and diplomatic engagement including the prime ministerial visit to Bahrain in 2019. India’s decision to join the Bahrain-based and US-led Combined Maritime Force (CMF) as its 35th member in May 2022 underlined New Delhi’s commitments to maritime security in the Gulf region and Bahrain’s significance role in it.
